A QUICK STOP IN CHEMAINUS
One of the wonderful things about cruising, is the tips you get from other boaters about places they've been to and recommend you see. Chemainus, a town north of Victoria on the east coast of Vancouver Island, was recommended to us by a delightful couple we met at the Floathouse Restaurant at Gorge Harbour.
Another draw, for Captain Roland, was the fact that the harbour master at Chemainus Harbor is Dutch ... Harmon, a delightful guy to meet if you dock at Chemainus Marina.
Here's the Chemainus claim to fame ... the town reinvented itself back in the 80s when its industry disappeared and it commissioned artists to create more than 30 outdoor murals throughout the town as a way to revitalize itself as a tourist destination.
It's a fun one-day stop ... and if you need a place to provision ... we recommend the 49th Parallel grocery store just up the road from the marina. In the meantime, if you follow the footsteps painted on the sidewalks through town you'll enjoy an entertaining tour of all of the murals ... with some wonderful unique shops, restaurants and theaters along the way.
